|Violet, red, orange, pink, lilac and mauve, the waterlilies
grow in tufted clumps beneath the woodblock bridge
so Fragonard, so Utagawa, in this garden just set up to be painted,
this open-air still life, this reflector of wind, season, and will.
For 9 years he shuttled from one site to another, working 6 canvases
at once, until the cataracts struck. Then reds
ran to mud, pinks went pale, and the deep tones arose.
