Mount Fuji
Waterlilies 8.  View from Gohyaku Rakon Temple

Isolated above the water, the wood

Creaks and rejoins, its soft surface

Responding to the slippers and heels

As the crowd presses up to the rail,

Unable to hold back, one man crying out,

Pointing, the two women resting at last

On the smooth round railing, looking out

Past the pond, along with the aristocrat,

The man with the itchy scalp, and the man

Resting next to his huge pack.

Only the little boy ignores it, clinging

To the clump of herbs, resisting all this adult

Hoopla, drawn forward anyway, by his mother,

To make this moment a souvenir, focused

By the landscape on the point between two villages,

The magnificent bump, Mount Fuji.
