| Waterlilies |
when wise students hear of the way |
they practice it energetically |
when average students hear of the way |
they waver between belief and disbelief |
Mt. Fuji |
when fools hear of the way |
they burst out laughing |
if they didn't guffaw |
it wouldn't be the way |
| thus old folks say-- |
the brightest way seems dull |
the way forward seems to go back |
the level way seems uneven |
|
| the highest way seems a valley |
the purest white seems dirty |
the strongest virtue seems lazy |
the pure and natural seem worn |
|
| the biggest checkerboard the earth has no corners |
the largest bowl takes longest to glaze |
the greatest music has the softest notes |
the gigantic image exists beyond any shape |
|
| the way hides without name |
yet only the way knows |
how to create and complete |
